22nd March 2020
4th Sunday in Lent

Suspension of Public and Weekday Masses continues.
However, Masses continue to be offered privately by every priest and in every parish. For your reassurance, I have offered at least two Masses every day (one in the church and one at home — and an extra Irish Mass on St Patrick’s Day) for the intentions of the parish. It pains me not to be able to let people know the times of these Masses but any possibility of attracting a group is to be avoided.

It is heartening to notice that people are visiting our church every day in impressive numbers, going by the consumption of shrine candles.

Live Broadcast of Masses
I commend the daily broadcast of Mass on RTE and also live broadcast on the Internet from many churches throughout the City and County of Cork.

Stations of the Cross
Continuing every Sunday during Lent at 8.00 pm.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Continues as normal
IF PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO ORGANISE ADORERS FOR ADDITIONAL HOURS OR EXTRA DAYS THEY WOULD BE VERY WELCOME.

Prayer for a Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart … I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You

Prayer to protect against the Coronavirus

Our Father, we trustingly pray to you, asking that the coronavirus may do no more harm, that the epidemic may be swiftly got under control and that you restore the health of those affected and peace to the places where the virus has arrived.

Welcome into your kingdom the people who have died from this illness and comfort their families.

Sustain and protect the healthcare personnel who are fighting it and inspire and bless those working to control it.

Lord Jesus, doctor of our bodies and souls, we feel impotent in the face of this international health emergency but we trust in You. Give us peace and health.

Mother Mary, protect us and continue to take care of us and lead us through your love to your Son, Jesus. Amen.

12th JULY 2020
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

WELCOME BACK
We are finally able to celebrate public Sunday Masses. I hope and pray that we are truly on the home stretch, safe from a resurgence.

This time of lockdown and cocooning has, nevertheless, been a very rich one spiritually in some ways with dozens watching online or televised Masses every weekday and hundreds on Sundays. A constant trickle of visitors to our beautiful church is attested to by the rate at which our stock of shrine candles has been depleted.

These months have been hard for many people, even those who have not contracted the virus or who have been bereaved by it. Normal life was suspended, work and family life was often utterly altered. And we aren’t seeing the end of this yet. When we look back, though, we will be proud of the response of community and neighbours to any difficulty or inconvenience experienced by others. So many people rang myself in the initial days to make sure I wasn’t ill or in need of anything. Almost every community in the country had, within days of the start of the lockdown, put in place personnel to assist the cocooned.

I am very grateful to our Parish Assembly and to many other individuals who put in hours of work, unasked, to ensure best possible conditions for church use and online Masses. Every house should have got an information page about the return to Public Sunday Mass. A reminder of the main points: You don’t have to go to Mass at present; you may consider a weekday Mass instead of Sunday; It would be helpful is you could conform with the alphabetical Zone your townland is in.

Notes on attending Mass
● Please use sanitisers as you enter.
● There is a one-system in operation for the main aisle.
● Family groups count as one. Better use will be made of available space if families try to go to the side aisles
● To avoid contamination, there will be no collection baskets. There is a box in each porch made by Sam O’Donovan for Collection and Offertory envelopes and cash.
● Take this Bulletin home with you as it cannot be passed on.
● No Eucharistic Ministers. Holy Communion will be distributed first at the corner of main aisle and men’s aisle and then at the top of the women’s aisle. This avoids people crossing each other at the top of the church at Communion time.
● Observe the two-metre distance when going for Holy Communion.
● We’d appreciate help in sanitising seats after Mass, using the spray and paper towels provided.

MASSES
Weekend Masses:
Saturday 6.00 and 8.00 pm Sunday 10.30 am (Streamed)
Weekday Masses:
For this coming week we will continue with 10.30 am Mass streamed Monday to Friday. There will be no Saturday morning Mass on account of the extra Vigil Mass.
From Monday week, July 20th, we’ll revert to 9.00 am morning Mass on Mon, Wed, Thurs and Fri. With Saturday morning Mass still suspended while the temporary 6.00 pm vigil Mass remains.

Currowrane Cemetery Mass
Conditions for social distancing won’t be a problem in Currowrane cemetery so I’m happy to continue this annual traditional on next Wed evening at 8.00 pm. We’ll have to miss Clashavanna and Rathlcaren for this year. Due to the numbers which come for the Kilbrittain cemetery Mass in August, no decision can be taken yet until we see how things change over the next month. There will be a Mass at Kilshinihan Mass Rock on the second Wednesday of September.

19th JULY 2020
16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

A GOOD START
We were a little apprehensive about how things would work out last weekend. Thanks to the organizers, the helpers and — above all — the congregations we had a very smooth return. It was such a joy to see so many parishioners worshipping together again. After the enforced break, many aspects of our weekend liturgies which had become commonplace and, perhaps, a little stale were a novelty again had regained some of their essential freshness and timelessness.
One slight tweak this week to the one-way system is that we are encouraging people to enter the main aisle from both sides but keep one-way for Holy Communion and exiting. The reason is that people tended to sit on the left-hand edge of the seats last weekend after entering by the left wall. People coming afterwards found that the space further in was blocked from them.
I believe that the townland zoning achieved its purpose. While there was no obligation to stick to your own area, people were conscious of the system and anxious to comply, with the result that there was enough of a separation at the various Masses to keep the numbers even. We estimate that we had 70-80 at each of the Masses on Saturday and around 90 on Sunday.
Next weekend, July 25/26th:
6.00 pm: F to K
8.00 pm: L to V
10.30 am: A to C

KILBRITTAIN CEMETERY MASS CANCELLED THIS YEAR

After some consideration, and following the example of other parishes, I am reluctantly cancelling the Kilbrittain Cemetery Mass for 2020. Practical difficulties in ensuring social distancing would be impossible to overcome, given the large crowds we have in the cemetery each year and the way traffic congestion forces people to squeeze together when walking to and from the cemetery. As well as that, we would have to do without choir and Eucharistic Ministers.

The Mass would have been on the 14th August, Vigil of the Assumption, as usual. This year that date falls on a Friday and it means that we have three days of Solemn Masses together that weekend: Vigils Fri 6.00 and 8.00; Holy Day Saturday 10.30; Vigils Sat 6.00 and 8.00; Sunday Eucharist 10.30. I intend to take advantage of this to compensate in some degree with special prayers for the souls at all six of these Masses.

I will be blessing the graves privately on the Friday and I suggest that people visit their graves and pray there before or after one of the six Masses that weekend.

Holy Communion on the Tongue
I have always approved of and facilitated those who wish to express their reverence for the Eucharist by receiving on the tongue. I am happy, therefore, to remind people that this practice has not been banned for the duration of the plague. Many doctors have gone on record to the effect that this practice exposes people to no more risk than Holy Communion in the hand.

November Novena
It is envisaged that the Novena of Masses can be celebrated as usual this year, provided we are not restricted beyond Level 2. Going by respective congregations at morning and evening Masses last November, memory would suggest that we would have been well under this year’s permitted capacity. Of course, many factors may affect these plans in the meantime.

November Bereavement Mass
The solution to the usual Annual Mass for the Bereaved, which was always so well attended, is to spread the commemorations over the four 6.00 pm Saturday Masses in November: 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th. Families will be allocated Masses on the basis of month of death. These plans are also dependent on the situation at the time. The schedule will be published shortly.

Safeguarding Month
The month of October has always been the safeguarding month in the Diocese but how it is marked this year has changed because of Covid19. Instead of the annual Safeguarding Conference, the Diocese has a newsletter put online at http://corkandross.org/diocesan/safeguarding-newsletter-offers-updates-and-resources/

Novena for the Faithful Departed
Beginning on Monday week, Nov 2nd. There will be online Mass every weekday, Monday to Saturday, at 9.00 am and on Sunday at 10.30 am.
Lists for the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed may be deposited in church porches or parish house. As usual, the lists will be on the altar for all nine Masses.
A reminder, too, that the church continues to be open every day, affording an opportunity to offer personal prayers for the Faithful Departed.

Mass for the Bereaved
Usually celebrated on the Friday night during the novena with the attendance and participation of those who were bereaved since last November. This will be impossible now but special arrangement will be in place.

As usual we will be commemorating the Kilbrittain funerals (11) and those from outside parishes whom we had been asked to include in the Sunday Mass prayers by a Kilbrittain relative or friend (20). Also as usual we will have a candle prepared for each one of these with the name of the deceased.

What will be different this year is that those 31 candles will be on a table in front of the altar for the entire novena. They will remain unlit and can be taken away by a family member afterwards for lighting at home.

The names of all those being commemorated will be published on Facebook during the coming week and on parish Bulletin and parish website next weekend.

Cemetery Visits
The long-standing Indulgences for visits to a cemetery during November can be particularly useful this year. There is no restriction on this and everybody has at least one cemetery within 5 Km and probably would not be penalised anyway for travelling farther for this purpose.
The faithful who have confessed, received Holy Communion, and prayed for the Pope’s intentions (one Our Father and Hail Mary, or any other prayer of one’s choice) and who visit a cemetery and pray for the dead may gain a plenary indulgence applicable only to the Holy Souls on the usual conditions once per day from 1st to 8th November. This indulgence is applicable only to the souls of the departed. The stipulation for Holy Communion has to be set aside and the ‘Act of Contrition’ will suffice instead of Confession.
