New Year’s Reflections
Looking back on the months gone by,
As a new year starts and an old one ends,
We contemplate what brought us joy,
And we think of our loved ones and our friends.
Recalling all the happy times,
Remembering how they enriched our lives,
We reflect upon who really counts,
As the fresh and bright new year arrives.
And when we ponder those who do,
We immediately think of you.
Thanks for being one of the reasons we will have a happy
new year!

Renowned for her hospitality, alms giving and care of the sick.

God. Others followed her example and this led her to found a
double monastery in Kildare.

Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple Candlemas Da

y, mother and Lord. With candles in their hands, the people go out

World Day of Consecrated Life February 2nd

St. Blaise (Blessing of throats) February 3rd
Mass times 9.00am & 8.00pm (Since the 8th century he has been
venerated as the patron of those who suffer for disease of the
throat. He is said to have healed a boy who was choking. The
blessing of St. Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and
love for us and for the sick. The candles to be used for the blessing
of throats are blessed on the feast of the Presentation of the Lord.
Using two crossed and unlighted candles, the minister touches the
throat of each person, saying: Through the intercession of St.
Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every
disease of the throat and from every other illness); in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Sprit. Amen.

Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin
February 2012

The Role of the Pastoral Team for Funerals
On the first weekend of February, Kilbrittain Parish commissioned our
new Pastoral Team for Funerals. Now 23 parishes in our diocese have
people trained in this ministry and we joyfully welcome the Ministry of
Consolation into our parish.
Soon after someone dies we can still be shocked or upset or disorientated,
when we have to start making arrangements for the funeral. The role and
work of the Pastoral Team is to be there with a family to help and support
them, to listen to them and to guide and advise them as they plan the
funeral of their loved one. Above all, they will be there to reassure the
bereaved family, to help in making the Funeral more personal, meaningful
and prayerful as well as helping the priest on the occasion of the Rosary
in the home or Funeral Home, the transfer to the church, the Funeral mass
and the burial of their loved one. We would like to stress, the Pastoral
Team for Funerals will not replace the priest. He will continue his
ministry with the bereaved, celebrate the funeral Mass and bury the
person. The Pastoral Team will work alongside him as we all strive to
minister the love, mercy, consolation and compassion of Christ to all who
suffer such a loss.
If I can quote from Fr. Christy Fitzgerald (Diocesan Director for Liturgy),
in the recent Newsletter of the Pastoral Development Office of Cork and
Ross, he wrote, ‘The response of so many parishes to this invitation has
been hugely encouraging. So also has the way in which their ministry has
been welcomed and appreciated by bereaved families and the community
in general. This ought to give us great hope and encourage us to envision
other ways in which we all can become active in ministering to one
another in our parishes.’

Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin

April 2012
Now that our very successful Parish Mission comes to an end our focus is quickly changed to our Holy Week and Easter Celebrations. What so many who attended our parish mission experienced over the past week must not be put aside or forgotten but can lead us onward to experience the continuing out-pouring of God’s Love, Mercy, and Healing; when Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it and said to his disciples, “Take this, and eat of it, for this is my body.” and again when he took the cup and said to his disciples, “Take this, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins, do this in memory of me.” and when Jesus took the bowl of water and washed the feet of his disciples and told them, “If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you should wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.” (Holy Thursday-Mass of the Last Supper) That same Love when God gave his only Begotten Son to die for us on the Cross (Good Friday- Way of the Cross and the Lord‘s Passion) That same Love when God raised Jesus from the dead. On the night of all nights when all faith communities come together and celebrate the new light of Easter. (Holy Saturday – The Easter Vigil and the beginning of our Easter season).

Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin

May 2012

Prayer for busy people to Mary for the Month of May.
Sunday
 – Mary, Mother of our Redeemer and Mother of the Church, we offer you the praise of the Angel of the Annunciation–Hail, full of grace! Through you the Holy Spirit gave this world Jesus its Saviour–Son of God, Word made Flesh, Foundation of the Church.
Monday – Through you God’s holy people, his Church on earth, appeal for light and strength in its pilgrimage of faith. You have gone before us on the same journey and are now glorified in heaven. Be for us who are still on that journey of faith a true Star of the Sea, leading us to the presence of your Son where he sits at the right hand of the Father, enthroned in glory.
Tuesday – You were the first to believe. You persevered in prayer with the disciples in the Upper Room. You were a unique witness to the mystery of Jesus. All generations have called you blessed. Now God’s holy Church looks yet again to you for inspiration and help.
Wednesday – Be our Mother. Share with us your limitless faith. Take and keep us within your protective arms in a world that has largely lost faith and abandoned hope. Petition for us from your Son–as once you did so powerfully at Cana of Galilee–an increase of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life so that the Church may flourish in our time and thereby magnify his name. Touch the hearts of all our youth that they may see in every walk of life an opportunity to serve.
Thursday – Take from all our hearts the selfishness that sours relationships and keeps us centred only on ourselves. Give us hearts aflame with charity and filled with love. Make us, like the apostle John who was commended to your care, loving children of our heavenly Father, conscious always of your maternal presence in our lives.
Friday – Look favourably upon your children in our failure to provide the one flock under one shepherd for which Jesus prayed. Shine forth for us and for all the peoples as a sign of sure hope and solace as we strive to make our pilgrimage of faith hand in hand. Be our common Mother who prays for the unity of God’s family. May we see in you our model of that obedience of faith which should be found in all who listen attentively to what the Spirit is saying to the Churches.
Saturday – He who is mighty has done great things for you. Humbly we ask that you in turn may do for us these things for which we pray in the name and through the power of that most Holy Spirit who lives and reigns in the unity of the Father and the Son, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The 50th International Eucharistic Congress – Bringing it home!

As everyone is well aware by now the 50th International Eucharistic Congress will be held in Dublin from June 10th – 17th 2012. The main theme of the Congress is The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and with One Another. As Christ’s disciples in the twenty first century, we come together to celebrate the Eucharist because we are members of the One body of Christ. It is sharing in the Eucharist we come to communion with Christ. But it is also important to realise that we come to communion with one another. It is through this communion with one another we are challenged to welcome women and men, young and old, rich and poor, native born and foreign born and include them all in the life of our parish community and the local communities where we live. As an attempt to bring the Congress home to us here in Kilbrittain the following events will take place.

Sunday 10th June (Corpus Christi) – A Eucharistic Procession through the village of Kilbrittain follows the 10.30am mass, stopping at the Grotto for Benediction and returning to the Church.
Sunday 10th June – Adoration of the Eucharist will follow the procession until 8.00pm. There will be 30 minutes time slots for each station area in our parish. (See timetable on each door of the Church).
Sunday 10th June – A Holy Hour will close the Adoration of the Eucharist from 8.00pm – 9.00pm.
Monday 11th to Friday 15th – Daily Mass at 9.00am.
Saturday 16th – Mass at 10.am
Monday 11th to Sat 16th – Adoration of the Eucharist for 30 minutes will follow Mass with reflective music and the Eucharistic Congress Prayer each day.
Wednesday 13th – School Children will visit the Blessed Sacrament.
Saturday 16th June – Vigil Mass 8.00pm
Sunday 17th June – Mass 10.30am
Sunday 17th June – 2.00pm to 5.00pm a Parish Family Picnic in the grounds of the parish house. Bring and share picnic, bring along something and be in communion with one another, with a bouncy castle, face painting for children and music by John Madden and friends. Adoration of the Eucharist will be held in the quiet and reflective space of the Church during the afternoon.

Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin

July 2012

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

This weekend 30th June and the 1st July members of the Apostolate of Eucharistic Adoration for the Diocese of Cork and Ross have visited our parish and talked at our masses about Eucharistic Adoration. As you know there is already a small group of people who gather every Friday night at 8.00pm in our church to spend one hour with Jesus in Adoration. We are now hoping to extend our parish Adoration to every Monday from 9.00am to 1.00pm and every Wednesday from 2.00pm to 8.00pm. However this depends on YOU! As you entered the church this weekend you were handed an invitation from Jesus to spend one hour per week with Him in Eucharistic Adoration. You were asked to make a commitment of just one hour per week. If we take the average person, what do we spend our time doing per week; let’s take one week, 7 days, 168 hours. It is generally accepted that the average person needs 8 hours sleep per night over 7 days that is 56 hours. Take that from 168 hours and we are left with 112 hours. Now the average person working inside or outside the home (most women would do longer hours) works 8 hours per day, which once again over 7 days is 56 hours. Take that from 112 hours and we are left with again 56 hours for leisure and other activities. Even if we were to take 2 hours a day for daily ablutions, or sports, or TV watching, or internet browsing, that would still leave us with 42 hours a week for ourselves. Why not then give Jesus one hour! Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is spreading too many parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross, God is calling you! What qualification do you need in order to become a member of our Kilbrittain parish team for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament? The answer is easy, One hour of your time in a week … and a willing heart!

What is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament?

For many of us we come together over the weekend and celebrate as a faith community the Eucharist (Mass) and we believe that the bread and wine offered during it becomes for us the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus is really present among us and we receive him in holy communion. Another way we can experience Jesus’ real presence is in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The Body of Christ is exposed in the monstrance and we can spend time in his presence. We can adore and worship him, we can spend time with a true friend telling him all. There is a need in every person to talk to a friend; to tell what we have been up to, to tell how good things have been or how hard things have been, to tell what is bothering you. ‘A problem shared is a problem halved‘ they say. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament gives us the opportunity to spend time with someone who loves and cares for us deeply, more that we can ever know and imagine, someone who accepts us for who we are, not someone who will judge but just accepts us. There is so many pressures and worries on people today; relationships, financial, family, work, and sickness. It is great that we have someone we can unload all those things to, believing that somehow, someway he brings us his love and peace. All we have to do is be there!

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Fri. at 8-9pm.

September 2012

Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin September 2012
Not having to prepare a parish bulletin for the month of August it is hard to get back into the swing of things, but I’m sure I am not alone! September marks the new beginnings for many. After the long summer holidays the children are trying to get back, or beginning for the first time, into the routine of school, parents trying to get them to bed a little earlier, clubs trying to reopen and to organise their weekly sessions, getting used to having to switch on the lights that little bit earlier as each week goes by. The month of September always holds it’s own challenges.

In the parish we have already started our Autumn station masses. There are still many areas where there is no host family for the station mass (see below). Help us to keep this very special tradition alive and bring your neighbours together.

The work on the main church steps begins this week. Every effort will be made to make the disruption to a minimum but we do ask you for your understanding and cooperation as the work proceeds and we hope the end result will be something we can all be proud of.

Over the next few weeks we will be meeting the parents of our First Holy Communion children to start our “Do this in memory” program for this year.

We hope to run the Alpha course which is a fifteen session practical introduction to the Christian faith. The course is normally run over a period of ten weeks with one day away and it covers topics such as; Who is Jesus? Why and how should I read the Bible? Why and How do I pray? Who is the Holy Spirit? How can I make the most of the rest of my life? And many other interesting topics. This course would be open to all. Our hope would be that this course would develop into a Lectio Divina (Sacred Reading) group within our parish. Whoever all this depends on the response.

So as we begin the month of September let us welcome it and take up the opportunities and challenges it offers us. Whatever we do let us do it with faith and together knowing that we will achieve little on our own. W

Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin October 2012

Last year Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith which begins on the 11 Oct. 2012,
on the 50 Anniversary of the opening of the 2 Vatican Council, and will conclude on the 24 Nov. 2013,
the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King (Christ the King).
The purpose of the year is to give the faithful an opportunity to understand more profoundly
that the foundation of Christian faith is “the encounter with an event, a person, which gives
life a new horizon and a decisive direction.”
[1] Founded on the encounter with the Risen Christ, faith can be rediscovered in its wholeness.
To mark the beginning of the Year of Faith there will be a
Celebration of the Eucharist in our parish church on
Thursday 11 October at 8.00pm
.
We encourage as many people to come along as possible.
Also at the beginning of this Year of Faith our parish is hosting a course called ALPHA.
This is an interdenominational course that serves as a refresher course for both practicing
Christians and for those who have lapsed in their faith.
An introduction night has been organised for

Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin November 2012

A reflection for the Month of November
“It has been traditional in Ireland to regard the dead as very close to us who are living. Peg Sayers, a traditional storyteller who lived on the Great Blasket island off the Kerry coast was once asked where heaven was. In reply she said it was just a few inches above the head of the tallest man on the island. Heaven and earth, like life and death were one in the traditional way of thinking. Whether or not Peig realized it, her belief about heaven’s closeness to earth is very similar to the thinking of the great medieval mystic known as Meister Eckhart. When he was asked where does the soul go after death Eckhart said, ‘No place. Where else would the soul be going, where else is the eternal world? It can be nowhere other than here.’ We have somehow managed to lose that sense of nearness of eternity and to forget that once the soul is free of the body, time and space, distance and separation are meaningless. Year of Faith

Dec 2012

Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin December 2012
Advent is the name given to the period of preparation leading up to Christmas.
It begins on the 4 Sunday before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve.
In our church Advent is the beginning of the Christian year because the Church begins with Christ. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus,
meaning “coming.”
It is a celebration of Christ’s first coming, and at the same time
a preparation for his return.
In the early church Advent was a time for fasting and self-reflection similar to Lent. Believers from the ancient church would be shocked at our lack of seriousness during the days leading up to Christmas.
So many of us get so distracted with the commercial side of Christmas,
we could benefit from more time spent in spiritual reflection.
The Season of Advent is about hope. We look back on the longing of the Old Testament (OT) saints for the coming of the promised Messiah
(This is reflected by our Jesse Tree showing some of the major symbols from the OT), and we look forward by the use of our Advent Wreath (the symbol made up of evergreens signifying continuous life, the circle which has no beginning or end signifying the eternity of God.
The four candles; 3 purple symbolising prayer, penance, and preparatory good work,
1 rose symbolising rejoicing, and finally the white candle standing in the middle symbolising Christ.
The great Christian writer C.S. Lewis wrote an essay contrasting Christmas and Xmas, he describes them as two entirely different holidays celebrated on the same day. So maybe this Advent you can reflect on which one are you celebrating,
Xmas or Christmas?
Happy Christmas All!

Kilbrittain Ladies Social Group will hold a Christmas Party Night in the hall on Mon. Dec. 3 at 8pm.
Kilbrittain Red Cross will hold a meeting in the Clinic on Wed. Dec. 5 at 9pm.
Mobile Library will visit Kilbrittain Church Car Park on Fri morn. Dec. 7
Kilbrittain Foroige Club are organising a Remembrance Tree. This is for loved ones or someone you would like to remember in a special way or someone who has passed away. The person’s name or a thought can be written on a ribbon which will be placed on the village Christmas Tree on Dec. 7. Ribbons will be available on the night or in local shops. A donation would be appreciated and this in turn will go towards the Christmas Lights in the village.
St. Josephs Young Priests Society will meet in the sacristy on Tues. Dec. 11 at 8pm. An evening of prayer and Mass will be held at Myross Wood on Sun. Dec 16. Bus leaving village at 1.45pm. Contact Gretta 8849738 or Maureen 021 4778218 before Tues. 11. Prayers are requested for five young men studying for the priesthood for the Cork and Ross Diocese.
Kilbrittain NS Christmas Concert takes place on 11 and 12 Dec. in the hall from 7.30pm. All students perform on the 11 and 2-6 class on the 12 Dec.
An afternoon of silent prayer, story and Mass led by Fr. John Fitzgerald MSC will take place on Sun Dec 2 from 2.30-5.00pm at the Sacred Heart Centre Western Rd. Cork. Theme- Peace for our World.
